So I know that this is going to make me an official geek but I can’t help it. I debated and debated but I couldn’t help it……..I ordered Super Mario Galaxy 2 this weekend. The only reason I didn’t have it for release day was because I really had a hard time justifying spending $50 on a video game. I mean really it is a video game and I am an adult now. Can you really justify the expense and all the time that I will take saving Princess Peach? Hmmm apparently I can! Just the thought of being able to collect all of those star bits made my heart go all pitter patter. I mean how can I not since star bits really are the thing that any 30 something person needs to be focused right?
So now that I have ordered it and before it is in my excited hands lets look at how I justified this non-reader. Really the only way to justify something like this is to over intellectualize the game. So here we go…….the game really is just a way to show the fables of the past. Nintendo has nothing on those pesky Grimms brothers. Now since I had some very forward thinking people in my life (thanks Aunt Ellen) I not only had the Disney versions of all of these wonderful stories but I had the traditional/original versions of them. Now if you haven’t read those you should revisit them. They have NOTHING on the horror movies of today. Where Disney had those greedy kids eating the candy house with other then a little tummy ache those brothers wanted to teach you the real lesson. Small child if you are off without permission, steal and over eat that will get you the trifecta which is rewarded with death, in an oven no less. So admittedly Nintendo didn’t go that far thank God but they are somewhere between Disney and Grimms. You do “kill” things but they come back in another world and really it is all for a good cause, saving Princess Peach. Also where other generations even mine learned from reading books and seeing our parents in action this is the digital generations that are being raised. This generation does still read our favorites and sees the movies thanks to the Disney marketing machine but we know that Wii and X Box are having a significant impact. I for one would much rather see them saving Princess Peach then killing and fighting and doing all those things that I hear they do in Mortal Combat number whatever they are at now!
So why does all of this matter since I don’t have kids that I am affecting and no kids will play it at my house you ask? Well you silly non-reader it matters because if my 30 something self doesn’t buy it and help its sales numbers there will be no Super Mario Galaxy number whatever they are on for future generations. Don’t we want there to be a balance? Don’t future generations deserve star bits and Princess Peach? I think they do.
See I can really make anything in the world have an ultraistic bend can’t I? All of that to be said if you don’t hear from me for the next few weeks after the Memorial Day weekend and think that I have died I haven’t. What has really happened is that I am on the quest to save Princess Peach and get as many star bits as possible. I am doing it for future generations and it has nothing to do with the fact that I loved the first game and was OBSESSED with star bits!
